Global Food Safety Initiative In Brief
In April 2000, a group of international retailer CEO’s identified the need to enhance food safety, ensure consumer protection and to strengthen consumer confidence. As a response, the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) was launched at the CIES Annual Executive Congress in Dublin, Ireland on 31st May 2000.
GFSI aims to decrease cost in the global food system by eliminating redundancy and improving operational efficiency, develop competencies and capacity building in food safety to create consistent and effective global food systems and provide a unique international stakeholder platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange and networking. By driving continuous improvement in food safety management systems, GFSI is helping the food industry to ensure confidence in the delivery of safe food to consumers.
The Global Food Safety Initiative has been collaborating with key food safety stakeholders over the past 10 years to promote the convergence of food safety management schemes through a benchmarking process, thereby improving cost efficiency throughout the food supply chain via the common acceptance of GFSI recognised schemes by global retailers.
GFSI would like to strengthen its links with local retailers, manufacturers and service providers to identify the needs of the US marketplace in order to identify future work items to add to the GFSI agenda.
A Neutral Platform
This food safety meeting will provide an opportunity to introduce GFSI to the US marketplace but it also serves as a unique opportunity for networking, knowledge exchange and sharing of best food safety practices and information.
